Things to Know

Dear Families,

Welcome to the fourth grade!  I am looking forward to a very productive and exciting year in Classroom B9.  This year each student will have lots of fun reading, writing, and problem-solving. Please encourage your child to do their very best!

School starts each day at 7:00a.m, breakfast will be served.  Students are tardy at 7:30.  Students will have weekly homework assigned on Friday.  It will be due back the following Friday.  Please make sure each student has their backpack, communication binder, snack, and signed planner, every day when they arrive.

We will have recess and activity every day.  Tennis shoes are recommended.  Our activity schedule is as follows:

Monday- Computer

Wednesday-PE

Communication

You can contact me via district email [email protected] (best option), or by calling the school at 228-522-8850.  The office will take a message and I will call you back as soon as possible.  Student planners are a great option as well.  **Transportation changes MUST be in writing.  I have to have an email or a note.  I cannot accept the word of a child. This is for their safety.

Daily grades, test grades and progress reports will come home on Tuesdays.  Please sign the folder, test, and report card sleeve and return it the next day when applicable.

Learning Environment

In order to create a positive learning environment, I have developed a family plan with specific expectations for all students.  Everyone in the classroom will work together as a family member to achieve our learning goals with few interruptions.  The plan below outlines the classroom rules, positive rewards, and consequences for appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

My classroom expectations:

#1 Listen when your teacher is talking.

#2 Follow directions quickly.

#3 Respect others, respect yourself, respect our school.

#4 Raise your hand to speak or stand

#5 Be safe, be kind, be honest.

To encourage students, I will recognize appropriate behavior with individual, group, and class rewards.  Individual students will be praised for their good behavior and will be rewarded with positive notes, stickers, house points, or special privileges.  On a weekly basis, groups may earn  house points for cooperation, participation and preparation, among other things.  Also, the entire class may accumulate points for certain achievements as a class towards a goal we choose.

If a student chooses to ignore an expectation:

  •         First Consequence:           (Step 1)Verbal warning.
  •         Second Consequence:      (Step 2) Thinking time;(teacher

                                                               conference)

  •         Third Consequence:         (Step 3)Note/Phone call if needed. Student loses privilege (such as: sitting with the group,                                                              recess, etc.)
  •         Fourth Consequence: (Step 4)Phone call/Conference w/Parent.  Student loses privileges.
  •         Severity Clause:              Office visit (if student chooses to fight or break multiple rules)

Check for notes, discuss, and sign planner daily.

This week’s homework is to discuss this plan, sign up for Remind101, and fill out the attached survey, and return it school by Friday.  Your support of this plan is essential; I look forward to working with your child and your family throughout the school year.  My door is always open to you: please do not hesitate to contact me for any reason.  It’s going to be a SWEET year!

Light and Love,

Mrs. Shaun Mims M.Ed, NBCT
